Chinese officials seem to agree. According to an expert who advises the Chinese government on AI, DeepMind's Go victory in 2016 was a 'Sputnik moment' for China. The country set a goal to equal the US' AI capabilities by 2020 and pull ahead by 2030, and has been funding AI research at key tech firms. Tencent Software, one of these firms, surpassed DeepMind's Go achievement by beating a better ranked Go player, despite giving the player a significant head start in the game.
